MONT PORPHYRE
Mont Porphyry takes its name from the rock of the same name from which the mountain is mainly composed. Tailings from the now-closed mine smokestacks were blown over the top of Porphyry, along with previous logging, eliminating the mountain’s vegetation and exposing its surface to the prevailing northwest wind. The trails face East, thus the slope faces away from the prevailing wind which makes it easier for the Mont Porphyry ski area to retain a maximum of quality powdered snow.
The Coop Accès Chic-Chocs has carried out several development projects to increase the quality and quantity of trails on Porphyry, notably by seeking to improve the regeneration of the forest cover, allowing a greater retention of snow through the undergrowth. The absence of vegetation at the summit also highlighted the Southern Shoulder of Porphyry, or the Ridge as it is more often called by locals. This is undoubtedly a coveted spot! It offers a splendid view of the authentic town of Murdochville, the old copper mine and the multiple wind turbines surrounding its landscape.
Mont Porphyry is an ideal mountain to begin your skiing adventure in the Gaspesian snow. You can explore one of the 12 trails and multiple trajectories while you enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view. Mont Porphyry’s vertical drop offers a stimulating plunge into off-trail skiing for beginners as well as for experienced skiers. Being located just outside the northern limit of Murdochville, this mountain allows residents and town visitors to ski to Mont Porphyry directly from town. You will be happily skiing through beautiful white powder in no time! Similar to an urban residential neighborhood, Murdochville is a small town where all activities are accessible on foot or on skis. This unique aspect distinguishes Chic Chac from other lodges and ski resorts. Therefore, many skiers and snowboarders make sure to spend a day experiencing the trails of Mont Porphyry. You can explore by yourself or choose to be accompanied by one of our guides who will help you discover the most beautiful trails possible for your descent. The Chic-Chac offers guided off-trail skiing days with skins, Cat-ski and helicopter rides on Mont Porphyry.
